Ah so there is a reason for Ramiel’s actions. I do wonder what mark does the voice give to their chosen? Surely demons also have their own. I would also assume having such a mark gives some demon pause, but also make them larger targets. Taking down a reader is robbing the Tennin some a strong individual, but taking down a chosen? There is probably a lot of glory and fame for anyone who does, and they are probably worth a hundred readers as they are not just a strong individual, but probably a spiritual one as well.
Come to think of it Ember has some mark on her left hand does that have any significance? No one seems to have pointed or brought attention to it though. That mark must mean something. I’m surprised Elane didn’t try to study that marking on Ember as it might give more info on what Ember is and what her intentions might be.
One theory is that the voice doesn’t ‘choose’ but instead leaves a similar power out to be claimed by anyone with a sufficient bribe. It might well be that Shades like Flint are the equivalent of a “chosen”. It would address the lack of anything resembling a shade outside of Team Demonic.
The Dark Voice learning a thing or two from Death’s experimentation might explain why Nayah’s chosen are just like everyone else but better, while Darkness’ “chosen” are selectively immune to physical interaction.
An interesting thing about Ember is that she seems to have a new bloodline. Pages 207/8 seem to imply that bloodlines and gods are a matched set. Gods appear to be physical people who actually exists someplace in the world. If gods have a race that is receptive to their power in bloodlines, and a symbol that bestows their power in chosen, then what does that say about Ember who appears to have both, yet with no known god correlating to either? Is her extreme hydrophobia relevant in any way?
I really enjoy lore and worldbuilding, and I think you’re doing a great job with this page alone even! I’m curious to know more, and look forward to whenever we see Ramiel again.
TBH I read that exchange as Bernin getting annoyed at Ramiel seemingly wanting to use him as something between bait and a lure to draw Demons to himself, because Bernin is angry but proud, he wants to fight off the demons himself, and here’s Ramiel talking like he’s going to protect Bernin, make the demons go away for him.
Of course, I could see them potentially getting to be friends if they fought the darkness together though?
Three pages in and Ramiel might be the most interesting character yet.
Glowy wolf is Ascended Ember from the future that went back into the past…
… somehow..
Checking out her pedicure while scrying.
