I’m sorry Ember, but I don’t think that libraries are qualified to provide sanctuary. At least not from readers.
What sort of lazy reader puts their mark on their armour? Getting magic gunk on your fur and having to replace it every time you wash is a mark of dedication!
The army needs to invest in helmets, not just those muzzle guards. Even if she just rolled off him just the way his head hit the ground with Ember on top of it makes me think at the very minimum that guy is out cold, and at worse a snapped neck. I’m betting on the guy is just out cold. Though I don’t see a “crack” effect so I’m sure it’s not that bad.
Well one down three to go. Talk about a lose – lose situation if Ember didn’t resist the reader probably would have cut her up badly, but since she resisted, and caused harm to a member of the guard; now that have reason to use excessive force. It’s the word of multiple guard members vs a demon so it’s highly in their favor if questioned. Perhaps even have reason to use lethal force for “attacking” a member of the guard. Ember better forget her backpack and run for it.
Also still no red eyes? I’m surprised that this still wasn’t enough to bring it out, but when Ahrem grabbed her arm just to have a chat with her she revealed it instantly. Sure Ahrem is a powerful mage, but these guys are armed to the teeth and truly intend to harm her.
Time has passed and she has been working on it, so the red eyes should be more controlled, even if the demon is not. More though, she was panicking on account of getting caught, and arm around her she didn’t expect when she thought she had escaped. This situation is far more serious(but more so for our perspective than hers I think), but has had longer to build and is more telegraphed, so she is less startled. Something else is that her actions seem rather controlled, she may have trained for this, somewhere. There were three years we missed afterall and being grabbed is something she would worry about.
As for helmets? They certainly could do better, but remember that magic is a thing. It seems to go through armour in multiple ways, and isn’t always as visible as a weapon. It could be that visibility is much more important to these people than to us. They also have massive ears, which again want to be exposed for awareness reasons, which further complicates things. Finally, this is entertainment, so seeing people’s faces is nice and it is seriously difficult to find a media that doesn’t ignore helmets at the most ridiculous of times. but that does indeed look like the makings of a nasty concussion.
And yes, Ember is having a bad day. She seems to have many. I doubt that this will be the worst, although it is likely one to remember…
Oh, and the action scene is very nice. A relatively complex manoeuvre conveyed clearly in, let’s say two-and-a-half panels. Looks like a bargain to me.
I guess so. Learning to restrain her red eyes would fall under the “dealing with you demon problem”. It seems to be most tied to her emotions, and I can imagine Ember learning to deal with her emotion is something she can do compared to finding a way to completely remove the voice inside her; as she currently needs someone to cast the spell for her. She can’t exactly convince a mage who isn’t a reader if she is walking around with red eyes.
Helmets are one of the most important and basic piece of armor. If magic is such an issue that it can easily go through armor then why even wear armor at all? If they value vision significantly then perhaps wear something similar to a kettle or an open face sallet helmet. They would just need to have ear holes though. However now I think about it more likely helmets probably “fell out of favor” similar to how shields were dropped in Japan, way before when the matchlock was introduced. Then again they could just be excluded for aesthetic reasons. I think we are really diving a bit too deep about this; or at least I am.
I’m not so certain that they are the Voice’s enemies. We have heard that there are agents of the voice anywhere…
Regardless, you are right that they are doing a terribly good job of converting Ember to the dark-side though and that their conduct seems better suited to demons. Then again, warriors and demons often don’t have much to differentiate them…
Fellow reader Sil seems much less bloodthirsty than this guy. Or maybe he just wanted to make sure she gets an up close view of his new blade? And now she’s hurt his feelings.
GOOD GIRL EMBER!
Get ´em!!!!!
She is handling it far better than expected…

I keep wanting to see her scolding them for thinking that it’s a good idea to make the God of the demons happy when He’s their enemy.
