A mysterious stranger listens in, I don’t recognize the ears, and I see a bandaged arm hiding back there. Oh yes, and there’s a band with the Nayah’s Heart symbol on it too. hmmm . . .
The Quelladar from page 228 has a ring in the spot that this one has a notch. Then again, Mysterious Stranger’s ears are curving together, rather than curving up, which, of all things, is distinctly feline. Although it is also consistent with foxes and Domestics are a bit that way on occasion too.
If there is some sort of significance to Helpful Quelladar’s earring then it could be someone who had a similar earring and lost it.
Ember… are you maybe forgetting something? Something important even? Something about a fugitive situation perhaps? Maybe someone close to you who is surrounded by an entire society who would kill them without hesitation? Some of whom might even have water spells?
No?
You have important magic study to do?
That’s nice. You go do that.
Huh… Looking back for “black ears with a notch in the outside of the right” I found a page(208) with, I suspect, an image of Death, who is referred to as a “his” with respect to “his” demise, while looking suspiciously feminine, and also that Preservation was killed at the same time by Death’s forces. Which is all interesting on account of Death and Elane having identical eyes, and Elane having access to “one of the last followers of The God of Preservation”… which is all probably nothing, but it does seem like rather more than the ordinary number of coincidences…

I think that your actually referring to an ancient Arctos Queen, not death Himself. If you look back one page, there is an Arctos boy bowing before a throne, of which all that can be seen is a skeletal hand with a ring and a black billowing sleeve. I suspect that skeleton was Death, not the crowned female in the next page.
As for Elane, she just said a few pages ago that she was from a “decay” bloodline. Decay and death tend to go together, so I’m thinking that the Decay lines originated with Death.
I’ll also toss my lot in the stranger is the author whom Elane mentioned earlier who is one of the last followers of the god of preservation. It could be someone else entirely, but if it would make some sense as having him to assess Ember to help Elane determine if Ember is a threat or not. As he is someone who searches for lost knowledge there might be something there that he might know that ties into Ember, but just needs to verify it.
Another possibility is it could be an agent of The Voice spying on Ember. I don’t think Ember isn’t too aware of them lurking around. I would say it could be someone from Veera’s Bloodline that is watching Ember, but chances are a greater demon would be found out miles before it reached the city. Unless there exist a way of masking their demon blood from being detected by readers. Doubtful as such a thing would be widely used to create chaos in Tennin lands frequently.
Hopefully this arcane trick really is safe. Ember is very willing to work with Elane so IF Elane has any malicious intent there isn’t a reason to do such a thing. She can however, still pull a fast one on Ember, but probably something not apparent. Something like sneaking in a tracking spell or a eavesdropping spell so she can better keep tabs on Ember.
When we last saw Echo(220?), he didn’t have an ear-notch and his ears seemed to have a mild, but learly present upwards curve to them that isn’t present on Stranger In Robes. He was also back in Briarwood, and fairly deep at that, at a point that “seemed” fairly contemporary. Echo would certainly be an interesting interaction here, and will likely turn up at some point, but this seems both too soon and the evidence doesn’t seem to match. Though certainly the evidence is not conclusive on that point. http://w0lfmare.xepher.net/character/echo
Yeah, after re-reading the whole series again, I doubt it’s Echo as I’d previously surmised. Reading the comic on my phone makes it hard to notice certain details, such as the notch in this one’s ear and Echo’s dark grey on black fur pattern. Reaffirming the continuity also means Echo would be too far away, last we saw him, to conceivably be here now.

And as for “Probably nothing to worry about”, wasn’t she warned that the Voice’s influence may have followed her across the border?

Regardless of what may or may not be going on, I think that Ember is so cute in panel 2. =3

I wonder if it’s Echo, looking for Ember? Haven’t seen him in a while. Iirc he’s a feral but not a demon, so he should be able to make it into a city.
