So readers aren’t all spellcasters? Or at least not primarily spellcasters after all. It always seemed that readers generally stayed with spellcasting, but there really isn’t anything stopping them from learning to wield a sword like a standard warrior. I assume splitting your vocation is difficult; so many staying as spellcasters makes sense as their magical affinity is “boosted”, and there isn’t any boost in a career as a warrior.
Perhaps this reader specialty is creating enchantments for weapons and armor which maybe why he is on the warrior’s path instead of a spellcaster. Being able to enchant your own equipment on the fly would be very useful as a warrior since you can alter it to better suit different situations.
That being said he also must have recently wrapped up his time as a patrol as he is worried of losing his promotion and probably being sent back outside as a patrol leader. As Cormac himself was a promotion away from being assigned to garrison duty.
I kind of want to know a bit more about this guy even though he is a jerk. Primarily what is his role as a warrior reader. As in patrols the general consensus is protect your reader at all cost. So staying in the back line is the safest place to be, but as a warrior that would mean he would be in the front where there is more risk when battling demons.
I’m surprised that Ember didn’t reveal her red eyes as this reader is antagonizing her, and the other guard right on her back surrounding her. I guess being intimidated doesn’t trigger it, just only if she gets very emotional? Now how is Ember going to get to the library now? Maybe after a chat with Elane she’ll let her go on with her research; with an escort of course. Elane already knows Ember is trying to find a way to rid of her demon side so her story of looking for a “cure” wouldn’t be completely unbelievable.
Yeah… I’m not buying it. He knows the healer’s part in this. No way he would stop by the healer if he detected a demon. He is here on the healer’s say so, with a mission, and had no intention of losing out on whatever deal they made. He just said all that to intimidate her. ‘possibly’ he is intimidating her to avoid a fight, which he believe he would win, and thus is messing with her to avoid hurting her, but I am leaning towards “meanie” at this point.

Meanie. He needs a good hard smacking.
poor Ember looks so miserable in that last box, kinda makes me dislike that guy. But kudos to him for not killing her right off the bat.
