It’s very mysterious, the fact that he doesn’t know her, but she knew (and even loves) him before they met. Did he save her in his childhood and forgot about it?
There’s obviously multiple possibilities, but my primary two guesses are:
1) She’s lying/it’s all a ruse to trick them all into doing exactly what the Veeki family wants, anyway (what I feel has the best chance at being true)
2) It appears she’s been observing him for a while. It’s possible that she’s fallen in love with her observations of him. Add in a pinch of crazy (for someone operating on their own, etc), and I feel as though what we see could be the result. Course, she could be telling the truth now about wanting to help and not see him die, but I’m guessing something will happen later where Bernin breaks her poor heart (basically where the whole ” we’re dating” / “no we’re mot” thing will come to a head) and then she betrays them (and possibly regrets her decision later, etc). (And as I typed that out, that started sounding more like the likely scenario in my head, too.)
Option 3… She has her own reasons for wanting to take down the Veeki family and claiming it is because she’s in love let’s her avoid the real reason. Her having or not having legit feelings for him in this case really doesn’t matter.
In all options, I think she does really enjoy teasing him.
It could be either of the two. She is acting questionable at times so it is hard to tell what her motives are. So why is she afraid of meeting Sil? Her reaction was almost the same as Hillel minus the running way part. I still think Vivian is hiding something, something that Sil can find out if she isn’t distracted with the whole boyfriend thing. Sil is a reader and as one she knows more then others can discern at a glance.
I’m kind of leaning to your fist possibility as well as she really is throwing’s herself to Bernin to the point that it is nearly unrealistically comical. She is announcing it so loudly and drowning out any accusation, in depth probes and steering conversations way off tangent. Well if Sil is right about one thing is that she is a spy of a sorts.
Personally, I think the most thematically appropriate possibility is that she’s not planning on back stabbing Bernin and is only be secretive because no one will trust her anyways. It’s just the only way she knows how to be. The comic’s main character operates heavily under a theme of not allowing her nature to dictate her decisions. Not saying Vivienne is necessarily as optimistic about her chances of escaping her situation, but maybe she sees Bernin as a means of doing so, considering he (and his sister) both accomplished the same, for all appearances. It’ll be interesting to see how her character shapes up, though.
Last panel made me snerk. 😛
Well Vivian is dedicated Ill give her that…

Yup, that’s a good possibility, too. Never even thought of that one!

Cormac the diplomat and Sil the berserker. Something of a reversal.
Taking into account the previous page, I’m beginning to think that Sil doth protest too much.
